Maurer sworn in as Calabasas mayor
      Calabasas has a new mayor, and she said she's looking forward to running the show. At last week's City Council reorganization meeting, Mary Sue Maurer officially took the spot formerly held by James Bozajian.

Teens named 'climate champs'
      California Air Resources Board Chair Mary Nichols and the British Council introduced California's 15 high school "Climate Champions" during a ceremony last week in Sacramento. Included were Adam Raudonis of Westlake High School and Arielle Gillman of Oak Park High School.

Lawsuit prompts warning about pollution
Cities, counties possibly negligent
      Almost two dozen local governments have been warned that the bacteria levels in Santa Monica Bay are too high. The actions comes following a lawsuit filed by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) and Santa Monica Baykeeper against the county of Los Angeles and the city of Malibu in an effort to reduce the runoff that's polluting the ocean.

      A Calabasas Environmental Commission meeting April 1 will give the public a chance to speak out about waste disposal procedures in Calabasas. The City Council directed the Calabasas Public Works Department to develop a new solid waste franchise collection system for residents and businesses.

      The Ventura County Fire Department offers the Volunteers in Prevention program, which assists with a variety of community education tasks and helps the department during major emergencies. The VIP program will conduct a volunteer orientation from 9 a.m. to noon Thurs., April 3.

Assessor takes look at property values
      Los Angeles County Assessor Rick Auerbach said his staff is in the early stages of reviewing approximately 310,000 single family homes and condos for a potential decline in value reassessment. Auerbach said his office is trying to ensure that property owners are not over-assessed because of the market downturn. By law, a review of recently sold properties is required.

Oak Park schools thinking outside the box
      The Oak Park Unified School District is putting out the welcome mat for students who live out of town. With declining enrollment affecting districts statewide and a proposed state budget that threatens to cut education dollars, Oak Park needs the outofdistrict students to make up the shortfall, according to Superintendent Tony Knight.

      Assisteens, an auxiliary of the Assistance League of the Conejo Valley, is ready to expand its reach and services to the community through a membership drive. The teen group currently has 26 members from Oak Park, Agoura, Thousand Oaks, Westlake, La Reina, and Oaks Christian high schools.

Students' film showcased at conference
      It began as a class project but turned into a much bigger deal for a group of Oak Park eighthgraders in Chimei Fregoso's history class at Medea Creek Middle School. While studying the American Revolution, classmates Brandon Camhi, Jenny Freilach, Eric Gold, Courtney Pomush, Carly Silliman and Daniela Torres decided to create a film about the time period.
