Polling place felt right at home
      For the past several years, my precinct has voted at Rivers Community Church on Corsa Avenue in Westlake Village. From the first time I voted there, I have wanted to publicly thank the good people of that church for their extraordinary welcome to those who cast their ballots there.

      I want to thank Secretary of State Debra Bowen for decertifying voting machines that might be faulty. Touchscreen machines are vulnerable to tampering. That's what computersecurity experts concluded in the "toptobottom" review she convened. I'm glad they won't be used to count my vote.

      It is ironic that Sunrise Development Inc. is wooing Westlake with an early Valentine's Day gift by proposing to "block out the sun" with a 3story, 226,000squarefoot, 192-unit apartment complex in the heart of Westlake Village.

Recycling strategy
      One simple way Calabasas residents can assist our city in meeting the ambitious goal of recycling 75 percent of our waste by 2012 is to switch out their small 64gallon recycling can for the larger 95gallon recycling can. There is no extra collection fee or delivery charge for the new 95-gallon recycling can.

Oak Park road brings danger
      We who live on the side streets that exit only onto Oak Hills Drive know its traffic dangers. Exiting from Vista Dorado onto Oak Hills Drive, we have a very limited view to the right- blocked by trees and an electrical panel- and a blind traffic pocket on the left which hides cars from our view.

Food drive was a big success
      After reading about a critical food shortage in our local food banks, I decided to put together my own food drive and left notes in my neighbor's mailboxes, about 60 of them. I asked them to pick up an extra bag of groceries when they were out shopping that week and leave them by their door for me to pick up.
