No SOS for Jewish day school Why does Los Angeles County refuse to acknowledge that Save Open Space appealed the Heschel school decision? This school project is just plain in the wrong place. It is a national park buffer Conservancy work program property that contains numerous animal trails. Will the new mountain lion in the area be safe or the children be safe near this school? Why is Los Angles County not requiring a Health Risk Assessment since it is near the unlined Class I toxic part of the Calabasas Landfill, which accepted tons of Rocketdyne/Class I wastes in the 1970s? Why are they afraid to require this property to be tested? Impacts of this 750-student school on Driver Avenue have been ignored. Driver is our only other route to the post office and local shops at non-Agoura High school traffic times. Hundreds of new cars could come from the northeast areas of Conejo Valley near Kanan and take the back way to Driver to get to this new school located behind Chesebro Road. "The enrollment data indicates that the majority of students attending the existing (Heschel West) school are located within the Conejo Valley." (Supplemental Final EIR). There are now two elementary schools in the Conejo Valley that are being closed because of declining enrollment. These closed schools would make fine alternative sites for Heschel West. SOS is committed to seeing that this rural open space/wildlife corridor not be destroyed by the nine building, some two-story, school complex. SOS needs your support to challenge this incompatible project. Visit www.saveopenspace.com or call our hotline to offer help. Mary E. Wiesbrock Chair, Save Open Space |
