Cool weather helps district meet goals
      Las Virgenes Municipal Water District says its customers responded quickly to a request for voluntary cutbacks in water consumption. District officials said there was 9 percent decrease in water use during December 2007 when compared with the same period in 2006.

Lost Hills deputy honored
     JAIME LOPEZ/Special to The Acorn IN THE LINE OF DUTY- Paul Scrivano of Agoura Hills, left, gives Dep. Mike Ranes of the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station the second annual Samuel Scrivano Award for Bravery at a Jan. 19 sheriff's function. The award, named after Scrivano's father, is given to law enforcement personnel who are injured on the job while protecting the citizens of Los Angeles County. In March 2007, Ranes' motorcycle collided with a car while he was pursuing a speeding vehicle. Ranes, who was hospitalized with serious injuries, is expected to return to active duty within the next month.

      Annemarie Flaherty has been in the field of parks and recreation since she worked as a swimming pool lifeguard while in high school near Chicago. After college, Flaherty moved right into her first job with the Arlington Heights, Ill. recreation program and has been building her career ever since.

Oak Park school taxes voted separately
      An Oak Park schools facilities bond measure and a renewal of the D4 parcel tax should be put to voters in separate elections rather than on the same ballot, the school board decided Monday. The parcel tax will be determined in the June election; the bond measure in the November election.

Alternative elementary school has rocky first semester, sixth grade class still wanted
Behaviorial problems may have led some parents to pull their children out
      The Las Virgenes Community Learning Center says it wants to add a sixth grade class even though the school has lost 50 students since it began operations. The alternative kindergarten through fifth grade school opened last September on the campus of A. E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas with seven classes and 154 students.

Schools recognize Julia Brownley
      The California League of High Schools has honored state Assemblymember Julia Brownley (D-Woodland Hills) as their "2008 Legislator of the Year." The award was presented Jan. 12 at the league's annual conference in Monterey, which was attended by 800 high school teachers and administrators.

Class assignment leads to lunch with famous British author
      Ellen Brennglass, a fourthgrade teacher at Heschel West Day School in Agoura, presents her students with the same challenge every year- write a letter to a famous author. If they are lucky the students might receive a standard form letter from the author's publishing company thanking the youngsters for their interest in the author.

      The San Fernando Valley Citrus Project will be picking the excess fruit on area trees and donating it to food banks throughout the San Fernando Valley.       The Agoura Hills Library invites teens to a double header video game tournament beginning at noon Sat., Feb. 2 at the library, 29901 Ladyface Court.
