Diesel generator planned near Westlake High
      Plans are moving forward to install a new Verizon emergency diesel engine at 112 N. Lakeview Canyon Road, near Westlake High School. The machine will provide backup service in the event of a power failure that could affect up to 3,000 Verizon customers in the Westlake area, according to Jon Davies, a Verizon representative.

Oak Park center loses Re/Max name
      Re/Max Plaza in Oak Park will now be called Oak Park Plaza. Effective Dec. 31, the real estate firm moved out of the 4,300squarefoot space it occupied in the retail center at Kanan and Lindero Canyon roads. "We're scaling down. There's no need anymore for such a large office," said Re/Max Realtor Cris Epstein. "I've never worked from the office.

Historical site ordinance underway
      The Calabasas City Council approved an ordinance last week that will begin the process of establishing historical sites and areas in the city. The city's new historical preservation ordinance will go into effect Feb. 2. Members of the community are asked to apply for a spot on the commission that will help run the preservation process.

State wants easier tax returns in 2008
      As local residents prepare to file their 2007 income tax returns, state and federal officials unveiled new programs, promised better service and reminded taxpayers to be aware of commonly overlooked credits. Customer service from the State Franchise Tax Board will be improved this year, said California Tax Board Chairman and state Controller John Chiang.

Patricia Doroshow's memory will be preserved in book
      Patricia Doroshow was a fighter- and an inspiration. Doroshow, 56, was a member of the board of directors at Heschel West Day School in Agoura Hills and a resident of Calabasas. She died on Nov. 14 after an 18month battle with colon cancer, but her memory will live on, thanks to family, friends and colleagues who are creating a special book in her honor.

New clothes for elementary kids
      Assistance League of Conejo Valley helped provide new school clothing and shoes to 1,160 elementary school children. Assistance League volunteers helped the children and their families make their selections, stay within the limit of their shopping vouchers, and get through checkout with all their purchases.

Artists can apply for fellowships
      The California Community Foundation invites residents of Los Angeles County to apply for the 2008 Fellowships for Visual Artists. The foundation will award $260,000 in fellowships to 14 Los Angeles County artists working in the visual arts. Ten fellowships of $20,000 each be given to mid-career artists and four fellowships of $15,000 each will go to emerging artists.
