Affordable housing can't be ignored

I am completely embarrassed and appalled by the remarks made by Jim Lahana, the president of the Morrison Ranch HOA.

Either Mr. Lahana was born into a very wealthy family, in which case he has no idea what it's like to earn a living and hopefully some amount of respect for doing so, or he's simply too full of himself to see that there are folks in this world other than himself, and certainly there are folks in and around Agoura Hills who not only work for a living but deserve to have a decent place to live.

Who is he to say that lowincome housing might attract crime, degrade the quality of schools and negatively impact home values?

Does he not understand that some of the folks who qualify as low-income are some of our children's teachers, our firefighters, our policemen? California law clearly states that a certain percentage of housing units must be available to families with a lower income level that perhaps Mr. Lahana is lucky enough to have. It doesn't matter what he wants or doesn't want; he is not in a position, as president of a HOA or as an individual citizen, to change state law.

He went on to say that lower income families are generally less educated. Mr. Lahana, being less educated does not make people ignorant.

I can only hope that Mr. Lahana did not find very much support for his views at the Morrison Ranch HOA meeting. It would be a shame to think that more of our city's citizens are this shallow and insecure. Karen Nernberg Agoura Hills
