Rotarians help their neighbors The city of Calabasas has entered into a service grant agreement with the nonprofit Calabasas Rotary Foundation to offer a counseling and referral program within the city to in dividuals or families in need. The Neighbors in Need assistance program will be available to Calabasas residents that require help with security deposits, shortterm rental assistance, moving assistance, furnishings and appliances, utility payments, food and necessities, counseling and other services as warranted. The first step of the program will be to refer residents to the appropriate social service agency. As a last resort, the program may make one-time emergency and short-term support grants. "Our community is fortunate to have the Calabasas Rotary step forward to act as a safety net for Calabasas families and individuals who are suffering from misfortune, whether it be a devastating illness, an unexpected death in the family or a personal disaster such as a house fire," said Calabasas Mayor Pro Tem Mary Sue Maurer. "Now residents can turn to the Calabasas Rotary in a time of extraordinary need to find helpful information, solace and some shortterm relief during a financial crisis." The city provided the foundation with an initial grant of $25,000 during a check presentation at the regular foundation meeting at the Native Cafe. The program officially begins in January. Information for applicants will be available at that time through the city's website at www.cityofcalabasas.com. |
