L.A. Animal Control should do better Robin Kahrs thinks I should volunteer at the shelter instead of complaining about L.A. County Animal Control's lousy phone service during emergencies. Sure, I'll do so the day that L.A. County makes a no-kill commitment for all of its shelters and promises not to kill healthy, savable animals simply because they have not found the animal a home. I can't stand going to the shelter and seeing cute little dogs kenneled right next to a dangerous dog in bite quarantine. The shelter should be doing weekly offsite adoptions at every local pet store if they don't have enough room to properly segregate animals for adoption from animals condemned to death. Isn't it LACAC's policy for volunteers not to question management's decisions? I don't want to sign up to volunteer if I will be automatically dismissed for not looking the other way when an LACAC employee kills an animal in violation of state law or I question a euthanasia decision. Besides the incompetent evacuation services that caused the suffering and death of many animals and its dilapidated phone service, many of the dog kennels at the Agoura shelter are not usable because a refurbishing project has been on hold for over 17 months. LACAC Director Marcia Mayeda's solution to shelter overcrowding is the blue solution: a deadly dose of sodium phenobarbital. Shame on the board of supervisors for appointing her and allowing these atrocities to continue under her direction. LACAC obviously does not care about homeless animals, those in harm's way of disaster or the local animals suffering from neglect and cruelty. Drive though Old Agoura and you will see a neglected horse on Driver Avenue in plain view. Surely LACAC officials have seen him many times yet have done nothing as he slowly deteriorates. My tax dollars at work. June Slayton Agoura Hills |
