Reader elects 'Scrooge of the Year'

In response to "No handouts for the poor," The Acorn, Dec. 6.

Congratulations, Mr. Edwin Locke of Westlake Village, you have just been selected "Scrooge of the Year." It was not a difficult decision considering you must be an adult who obviously has prospered and had plenty of time to understand and learn about the disparities of life.

May you never experience hunger.

May you never need a shelter.

May you never have a catastrophic illness and be penniless.

If our government is to protect our rights, it should be the rights of all, not only the rich.

In reality the rich and corporations only pay 7 percent of the taxes. These corporations are subsidized by the middle class. Society is a collection of poor, middle class and rich. When the biggest proportion is the middle class, prosperity occurs. There is less crime and a better living for all. There fore it is important to support this part of society for the betterment of all.

The middle class, now called the working poor, is shrinking and the rich are getting richer. Our deficit has never been so big with the biggest part of the U.S. budget spent on the military. With an administration that seems to follow a path of war without end, you will probably see more people waiting in line at the mission. Patricia Ahmad Agoura Hills
