Save Mulholland

Shame on the city leaders of Calabasas. This is a time where scientists and the media provide grave reports about environmental issues affecting every aspect of our lives. The threat of drought and water shortages is very real.

But instead of responsible concern for our world, we have seen the recent beautification of Mulholland Highway between Mulholland Drive and the high school including large swatches of lawn and individual plants with their own sprinklers.

And A.E. Wright, a school teaching its students about the environment and the importance of good citizenship, is also planting their front with the same wide green swaths.

Calabasas has been a model city in showing others what can be accomplished with its ordinances related to smoking. The beautification of the Mulholland Corridor was another great opportunity, but one that was missed: an opportunity to be a leader and role model in modern landscaping technology, in drip irrigation, xeriscape gardening and teaching all of us the importance of caring about the Earth.

As I drive by the new plantings every day I am reminded of the inconsistencies and sometimes lack of thought of our leaders. I hope for better decisions by them in the future and a healthy future for our earth. Joel Baker Calabasas
