Wants a 'no-kill' animal shelter Los Angeles County Animal Control announced in The Acorn their campaign for October as Adopt-a-Dog Month. If LACAC was doing their job under state laws to promote adoptions rather than kill homeless animals, then every day would be Adopt a Companion Animal Day at all six LACAC shelters. Most agencies entrusted to care for homeless animals have shelter policies geared toward killing healthy and treatable animals due to "overcrowding." They do not implement lifesaving programs such as comprehensive adoption procedures or working with rescue groups. Most importantly, they do not recruit a compassionate shelter director. Many people erroneously believe that the Agoura shelter is a no-kill facility. The shelter has a great volunteer force and foster care program. However, the languishing refurbishing project that has left 33 percent of the dog kennels unavailable for over 14 months is inexcusable. It indicates a reliance on LACAC's policies to "adopt a few and kill the rest." The time for accountability has arrived. LACAC must recruit a compassionate director who will implement all no-kill programs at the Agoura shelter, allowing offsite adoptions and recruiting additional volunteers and community partners eager to save lives and help the animals find loving forever homes.
