Readers weigh in on LVUSD school board election

During my two years on the Las Virgenes School Board I have had the privilege of being part of a governance team totally dedicated to the well-being and success of our students. Our school district is one of the largest employers in the region, studiously manages nearly $100 million of taxpayer funds, and interfaces with three cities and two counties, yet must balance the delicate needs and emotions of 12,000 students, their families, and our neighbors.

As a citizen of this community, I cannot ask for a more capable guiding hand on our school board than that brought by Terilyn Finders. For eight years, Terilyn has grounded every single decision upon what is best for our students.

Please vote to reelect Terilyn Finders on Nov. 6.
Dave Moorman
Las Virgenes Unified School District board member

As a longtime resident of Agoura Hills, I've known Terilyn Finders indirectly through both our kids having gone through the school system from K through 12. In my meetings with her at school functions, Ms. Finders has always been gracious, observant, and incredibly knowledgeable about the entire school system, and what needs to be done to improve it. It would be difficult for me to find anyone more qualified to represent the community on the school board than Ms. Terilyn Finders.

As an elective official in this community with two children in the Las Virgenes school system, I understand that to govern requires balance and hard choices. I believe Terilyn Finders will continue to be an effective asset on the school board.

To quote Debra Frank, 2006 teacher of the year, "Terilyn epitomizes great listening." I invite everyone to review her record at www.tfinders.com.

I also believe that our strong schools are a major attribute to our community. We need to continue to support our schools to receive all the benefits that they provide, including high property values, a high ranking level of education for our children and numerous community recourses for all to use.

Therefore, please vote on Nov. 6 and I encourage you to support Terilyn Finders and Measure E.

As a school psychologist, I support Terilyn Finders for reelection to the Las Virgines Unified School Board.

She has been an exceptional school board member for several years. She has provided the district with a strong leadership making a difference for our children, and has a keen ability to listen to others.

Her leadership, inter-personal strength, and creativity are widely acknowledged and appreciated.

Terilyn is one of the hardest working, and passionate school board members I have known. I commend her for her part in bringing autism awareness to the state level and for her collaborative style.

The school district and community have benefited greatly from her leadership. I endorse Terilyn Finders whole-heartedly and encourage everyone interested in maintaining the quality of our district to join me.

During Terilyn Finders' time on the school board, huge strides have been made in teacher/administrative communication and morale continues to rise, even in the face of budget challenges.

Both as president of the school board and as a board member, Terilyn has served LVUSD extremely well thus far, keeping harsh budget cuts away from the classrooms and finding creative ways to fund programs.

It is important to note that Terilyn currently has a child in the Las Virgenes school district and has had years of experience both as a PFA president and as a fundraising coordinator.

We applaud Terilyn Finders for all she has been able to accomplish during her tenure thus far and look forward to seeing her continue her successful quest to keep Las Virgenes Unified among the top school districts in our state.

Without a doubt, Terilyn Finders should be reelected to the Las Virgenes Unified School Board. Terilyn is a natural leader and works well, not just with the board, administrators, teachers and parents, but with other agencies, community leaders and anyone who will help her improve education for our kids.

She is focused solely on what will improve learning in our schools. There is not space to list her many accomplishments, but I especially like Terilyn's strength in opening the new Yerba Buena Elementary School and the new city park next door, the community-wide technology program, and bringing music and arts back into the elementary schools.

In Jill Gaines, I am so impressed by her already proven record of supporting education. Jill has been a teacher, PFC president, and co-chair of the Measure G campaign, along with having expertise in budgets and financial matters.

As a parent of two students currently in the district, I am thrilled that Jill will have an opportunity to positively impact their education.

Measure E is good for our kids, our schools and our community; its passage will help ensure that our children receive the high quality education that they deserve. Please join me in voting for Terilyn Finders, Jill Gaines and Measure E.

I have known and admired Terilyn Finders for some time. I have seen her in action as a representative of the LVUSD on behalf of the children in our district. She has been a superb representative.

Jill Gaines has been a wonderful asset to the education community for many years. I know that she will be a great school board member and advocate for our children.

The voters in our district could not be better served than by returning Terilyn Finders to the school board for another term and choosing Jill Gaines to join her in that endeavor.

Calabasas City Council

Terilyn Finders has been doing a great job as school board president and deserves our support. In addition, Jill Gaines is an excellent candidate for that second seat.

Jill is a Calabasas resident who is highly qualified as a former teacher, business owner and cochair of the Measure G bond campaign. She will focus on fiscal responsibility to make sure all the money is spent properly. She also wants curriculum reform to provide more balance to the heavy academics by providing more elective choices.

Finally, Jill will focus on improved partnerships among the district, schools and local cities.

I am writing as a resident, parent, CHS teacher, and AHS alumni of the Las Virgenes Unified School District. Sometimes we get frustrated and wonder what we can do to make a difference. Voting on Nov. 6 is a small way to make a big difference.

I ask you to vote yes on Measure E and for Terilyn Finders and Jill Gaines for school board. As a teacher and parent, education is my life. I know first-hand the positive results our students have experienced based on Measure E and the excellent leadership from our school board. I can't list everything but I'll mention improved math and science programs, support for performing arts, updated facilities, and state of the art technology, just to name a few. Please help continue this trend.

I am thankful for many things: The education my children and I have received in the Las Virgenes Unified School District tops my list. The opportunity to work in an outstanding district with incredible students and parents is another list topper.

Please vote for Terilyn Finders and Jill Gaines and vote yes on Measure E. Encourage friends and family to do the same.

The Las Virgenes Educators Association urges the election of Jill Gaines to the Las Virgenes Unified School District Board of Trustees. Ms. Gaines has shown herself to be a reliable and dedicated member of the Las Virgenes community as a parent, PFC president and cochair of the successful Measure G bond campaign.

In addition, Ms. Gaines has served as the treasurer of the Las Virgenes Education Foundation and as a member of the Measure G Oversight Committee. She has demonstrated the commitment and expertise that we expect a school board member to posses.

For these reasons and many more, we urge the voters of Las Virgenes to elect Jill Gaines.
