Kanan drivers, wait your turn If you consider yourself a fantastic driver and the rest of the drivers on the road just sheep, you're going to want to skip this letter and go to the next one. Every morning I drive south on Kanan to catch the 101 east into the Valley. Every morning I line up in the lane set aside for the cars making the right turn on to eastbound ramp. And every morning one or more drivers, not content to wait in line with the rest of us, will fly by in the lane to the left of me, and at the last moment cut in to the lane just in time to make the right turn onto the freeway. Can someone explain this behavior to me? I believe that these drivers are typical good citizens who would never dream of cutting into the head of the line at the grocery store, the movie ticket line, or the line of people waiting to get on Space Mountain at Disneyland. In fact, if someone tried it, they would be the first to shout them down. But put these people behind the wheel of a vehicle and suddenly they become rude, belligerent, uncivil drivers. Why is that? Can a psychiatrist/psychologist fellow Acorn reader explain this to me? Is it the anonymity of being inside the steel skin of the vehicle? Do the rules of civilized society cease to exist on the highway, or if you can't see the faces of those around you? It's the civility of everyone who drives properly that makes it possible for these drivers to take such advantage. I hesitate to think what they put on their tax returns if there's no one in the room to challenge them. The IRS should stop auditing random returns, and should just post a camera at Kanan and the 101 and audit the returns of taxpayers who cut into line. Budget deficit solved. And don't even get me started on the failure to use the turn signal. Mark Phillips Oak Park |
