Changes likely for Calabasas area code Possible changes in the area code for Calabasas and surrounding communities will be discussed at a public hearing on Tues., Oct. 23. The California Public Utilities Commission recently announced that there's a shortage of 818 phone numbers. Two possible courses of action will be explored at the hearing. The first would split customers with 818 numbers into two groups. One would keep the 818 area code and the other would change to the new 747 area code. The other alternative, an overlay, would allow all current 818 customers to keep their numbers and new customers would be assigned the 747 area code. All calls within the area would require 11-digit dialing. City officials say there is a "strong chance" that one of the options could become a reality by next year. The San Fernando Valley also would be affected. The hearing is at 1:30 p.m. at the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District, 4232 Las Virgenes Road, Calabasas. |
