District should honor class size

As a parent of a child attending a LVUSD elementary school, I support Measure E, the $98-per-year tax wholeheartedly. In The Acorn's article regarding this tax issue on Oct. 4, it was reported that District Superintendent Donald Zimring stated, "The money preserved small class sizes in kindergarten through third grade."

While this may be what the measure is intend for, among many other things, the district has thus far failed to provide smaller classes in all kindergarten through third-grade classes.

Some classes are reclassified as Option 2, which means a class size of 20 or more. These Option 2 classes are divided between two teachers- one fulltime and one part-time- during academic studies and then combined for non-academic studies such as P.E., art, music, computer lab and the library.

In an effort to save the district approximately $35,000 a year per class (a direct quote from Rose Dunn for the LUVSD board) the district has sidestepped this promise of equally small classes and refused parents' pleas for fundraisers pertaining to this issue.

I understand our schools will suffer further should Measure E be defeated in November. That is why I am urging all to vote for it. However, I also hope that should it pass, the district will do a better job of fulfilling the promise to keep K-3 classes small. So far their efforts have been lacking. Lorianne Tibberts Calabasas
