Shocked by fluoride controversy

I was shocked and dismayed that members of the OPUSD Wellness Council, which was formed to support the health of our children, publicly opposed the fluoridation of our water supply. It is important to note that this matter has never come before the council and these individuals were speaking as individuals.

Fluoridation is one of the public health wonders of the last century. Since 1945, enlightened water systems throughout the USA have implemented this important public health measure, serving over 170 million Americans, or 67 percent of this country's water supply.

The benefits of fluoridation are well documented. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that, for every dollar spent on fluoridation, $38 is saved on oral health care. Fluoridation is endorsed by every major public health, medical and dental organization in America.

The CDC states that it is "one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century, as a safe, beneficial and cost-effective way to prevent tooth decay in children and adults."

Former surgeon general C. Everett Koop has said that, "fluoridation is the single most important commitment a community can make to the oral health of its children and to future generations."

Those of us in public health have worked for decades to implement this program in Southern California. The Municipal Water District should be commended for its actions. Our children, grandchildren and future generations will benefit greatly from fluoridation. Harvey D. Kern Oak Park
