Students get in motion for Walk to School Day

International Walk to School Day will be Wed., Oct. 3.

According to National Center for Safe Routes to School, event organizer, the day is intended to promote walking to school for several reasons. It encourages physical activity and teaches safe walking skills to children.

Walking to school also gives students a sense of how walkable a community is and where improvements can be made as it raises concern for the environment and builds awareness about traffic congestion, pollution and speed near schools.

Walking also inspires community members to "take back their neighborhoods" for people on foot and promotes time with community leaders, parent and children.

The local event is sponsored by the city of Calabasas traffic and transportation department, School Area Traffic Safety Committee and Las Virgenes Unified School District.

Participating schools are Bay Laurel, Lupin Hill and Chaparral elementary schools and A.C. Stelle Middle School.
