Local artists' work to be on display at Reyes Adobe Days

STEPHANIE BERTHOLDO/Acorn Newspapers SHOW AND TELL- Local artists will showcase and sell their work at the annuyal Reyes Adobe event, scheduled for Oct. 12 to 14. Several local artists will showcase and sell their work at Reyes Adobe Days, scheduled for mid October.

The Art Gallery is being presented for a second year at the event, which will be held Oct. 12, 13 and 14.

Tom Spiegle, a Thousand Oaks-based photographer, will exhibit a variety of fine art landscapes and seascapes. His work is on display at the event for the first time.

"I'm very honored," Spiegle said of being chosen to showcase his photography at the gallery. "There are many great artists here."

June Czerwinski's fine art photos will be displayed at Reyes Adobe Days for the second year. Czerwinski, a Los Angeles resident, also works in children's portraiture.

"I sold three out of four pieces last year," Czerwinski said. "Hopefully, if I hang eight, I'll sell seven."

Fine art photography, Czerwinski said, is about "light, texture and shadows." She described her own work as "abstract and graphic."

Sheldon Borenstein, owner of Sheldon's Art Academy in Oak Park, has worked in the animation industry for more than 20 years and is an adjunct professor at San Jose State University. Borenstein's local students will stop by throughout the day to give drawing demonstrations while displaying their work.

"It will be fun because it will be a real cross section of kids- all different ages and abilities," he said. "People will be able to identify with them."

Borenstein will sell prints from his gallery on Catalina Island. He is creating a watercolor of the early 1800s Reyes Adobe home and barn.

Ruti Lopata-Kurzweil, an Old Agoura resident, will have a wide selection of her art pottery and gourd baskets on display. All of her works are made from natural materials, and she calls her art "Earth's gifts. It's natural and all around us."

Monica Nabati, who owns and operates Monica Designs, an art gallery and studio in Agoura Hills, will offer oneofakind, handmade jewelry.

Photo collages of children will be shown by Deborah Hancock, and Tim Bartley will exhibit and sell his wheel-thrown stoneware and porcelain pottery.

The event's featured artist, Laurence Viole of Old Agoura, will display etchings and pen-and-ink drawings of historic missions, said Constance Jolcuvar, chair of the festival's Art Gallery. The etchings were created by Viole's late grandfather and namesake, Laurence Viole, a renowned architect who designed Notre Dame High School and many Los Angeles area Catholic churches.

Jeremy Nedell, the featured student artist, will present several of his paintings in oil and acrylics.

Art Gallery hours during the three-day Reyes Adobe Days will be 12:30 to 2 p.m. Fri., Oct. 12; 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sat., Oct. 13; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sun., Oct. 14.
