Conserving energy a Rosh Hashana resolution

The American Jewish Committee Los Angeles Chapter, in honor of the Rosh Hashana- the Jewish New Year- and Yom Kippur, is supporting a New Year's resolution to reduce energy consumption in the home.

The committee has listed 10 ways to reduce energy usage:

Buy local. The farther an apple has to travel, the more energy is consumed. Farmers' markets support local farmers. Organic produce use less fertilizer, which is made from petroleum products, further saving energy.

Drive less. Take public transportation or car pool. Choose the most fuel-efficient vehicle when buying or renting a car.

Fly less. Air travel uses a large amount of fuel. For short trips, take a train or bus. Consider slower propeller planes if possible.

Home health. Weather stripping, caulking and other insulation measures can reduce home heating and air conditioning needs. Change furnace filters monthly. Use a digital timer to control air conditioner operation.

High-efficiency appliances. The higher cost of these appliances is made up for in energy savings. Avoid items that consume a lot of electricity, such as certain wide-screen televisions.

Fluorescent lighting. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, which use less energy and last longer.

Reduce phantom power: Many home appliances consume power even when not in use. Choose those with low standby energy consumption.

Moderate home tempera

ture: Install a programmable thermostat for better temperature control.

Use water efficiently: A lowflow shower head cuts water consumption, as do low-flow toilets. Wash and rinse clothes in cold water.

Green power: Contact the local energy utility about the availability of environmentally friendly green power, such as renewable energy credits.

The Los Angeles chapter is involved in efforts to encourage other religious institutions to reduce their facilities energy usage. The committee has urged the government to make a comprehensive energy policy, reducing the nation's independence on imported oil, a priority.
