Time to clean up Santa Susana mess

It is truly sad when money comes in front of children's lives, as I refer to the cleanup of the Santa Susana mess.

The Department of Energy was responsible for the nuclear meltdown and other accidents, spills and releases that radioactively contaminated the site. Other federal agencies were responsible for huge amounts of chemical contamination from 30,000 rocket tests.

The problem is that after promising to, they are not trying to clean it up- it is less expensive not to- so the water drains in beautiful expensive neighborhoods and people wonder why there is so much cancer.

Everybody needs to look at the science; the epidemiology has been done. Over 60 percent increase of thyroid cancer the closer you get to the lab as documented in Hal Morgenstern's recent study funded by the federal government.

We have seen over 800 percent increase in retinoblastoma, an extremely rare cancer of the eye in children. Treatment usually is removal of one or both eyes.

It truly saddens me that sometimes what is best for a company like Boeing, which operates the site, is not best for the public. Of course because if you live within five miles of the place you will surely die of some form of cancer, and if you are dead, guess you can't be a shareholder.

The increased cancer death rates for the exposed workers is documented with the UCLA School of Public Health study.

Public, this needs to be done. It won't go away, and I guess when you will get it is when your baby or grandchild has their eye removed.
