Calabasas honors Stillman
By Joann Groff joann@theacorn.com

Ronald Stillman is "well admired," "highly respected" and has served the city better than most, according to friends, staff and Calabasas City Council members. The council honored Stillman, chair of the public safety commission, before he makes the move to La Quinta to serve that Riverside County city.

"What I've enjoyed most about working with you is the tone you set in discussing any issues of concern in the community," said Mayor Pro Tem Mary Sue Maurer. "You are welladmired and have excellent leadership and an understanding of city affairs."

Maurer highlighted Stillman's relationship with public service agencies such as the sheriff's and fire departments. Stillman was at the helm of restructuring the Calabasas Emergency Response Program as well as establishing a multiuse designation of trails and working on fireworks safety awareness and the state's distracted driver legislation.

"A lot of what happens (in your committee) isn't highly noticeable," Councilmember Dennis Washburn said. "You've helped us communicate with public servants and safety service people. . . Folks like you make it happen and stick to it."

Stillman has been involved in the deputy explorer program, arson watch, brush clearance and emergency preparedness.

Gary Lysik, the city's chief financial officer, counts himself as both a colleague and friend of Stillman's.

"Much of the recent success of the public safety commission was due to leadership of the chair, and for the past year and a half that was (Stillman)," Lysik said. "I believe the understanding of safety-related issues by volunteers and city staff alike has been heightened through direct efforts of the chairman.

"Since 2002, Ron Stillman served the city of Calabasas in a way that only a few have done. His presence as commissioner will be missed. His presence as friend will always be remembered."

Mayor James Bozajian called Stillman a "pillar of support" for the community.

"Mr. Mayor, the city of Calabasas will always be in my heart," Stillman said. "I've learned a tremendous amount serving on this commission, and I hope to use that in the future.

"Thank you all very much- it's really been my pleasure."
