L.A. County animal agency is largest in country
More than 28,000 pets adopted last year

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care is now the largest animal adoption agency in the United States.

The department placed 28,309 animals last year, an increase of more than 600 animals from the 2005-06 fiscal year.

"Our staff and volunteers work diligently to place abandoned animals into new, loving homes," said director Marcia Mayeda. "They should be recognized and congratulated for their efforts that lead the nation in the number of animals adopted."

The agency serves unincorporated Los Angeles County and 51 contract cities.
