Our pets need workouts, too

Thank you so much for an excellent article illustrating a way for the family to participate in activities that include their dog ("Herding dogs keep livestock in line," Aug. 16 Acorn).

So many people purchase a dog as the family pet, but then forget that the dog requires training and exercise to have acceptable behavior.

Without training and exercise, owners have an out-of-control animal, the type which often gets sent to the pound to be euthanized.

Herding teaches the dog obedience, control and gives it exercise. It's a perfect sport for the kids to learn also and has junior competitions all the way up to the national level. Barbara Billig Westlake Village
