Bottled water is better than soda We are glad to see that the health benefits of bottled water are recognized in the debate of tap versus bottled water in the school (Aug. 23, "Bottled vs. tap water debate filters down to the schools"). As Schulz suggests, if children are not provided with the option of bottled water, it is very likely they will go back to sodas. Our research supports that notion, indicating that if people didn't have the choice of bottled water, 52 percent would drink soda instead. We agree that drinking water from public fountains is important to the hydration of our children. But 75 percent of people who drink tap water also drink bottled water, depending on which is more accessible and convenient. With obesity and diabetes on the rise, any way for Americans to drink more water, be it bottled or tap- rather than high-calorie, sweetened beverages- should be viewed as positive. Nestlé Waters shares the environmental concerns about plastic water bottles. Our new eco-shape bottle contains 30 percent less plastic than any other plastic beverage container currently on store shelves. We also advocate for stronger recycling programs that would recycle all plastic food and beverage containers whether they contain ketchup, peanut butter or water. We cannot do this on our own, but our company is stepping up to be part of a 21stcentury recycling solution.
