This Realtor Will "Work For Food"

Maybe you've seen the signs around town or on Jeff Howell's truck. There really is a Realtor who will "work for food." Jeff Howell and his wife, Vickie, a real estate team with Coldwell Banker Distinctive Properties serving the Simi Valley, Moorpark and surrounding areas, have found a way to grow their business and give back to the community. According to Jeff Howell, "We have set up an arrangement with the Ventura County food bank where we will donate 10 percent of our personal commissions on any home we sell or help a buyer to purchase."

The Howells got the idea of donating after he had an opportunity to visit FOOD Share Inc., Ventura County's food bank (www.foodshare.com). Jeff Howell said that he and Vickie received a two-hour tour of the facility and were impressed with the operation.

Jewel Pedi, community relations director for FOOD Share, said, "Our organization delivers meals to nearly 40,000 people each month." More than half of the donations go to feed children and senior citizens. Pedi said that monetary donations are always welcome because they have many arrangements with local vendors to help them get the most for their money. Fortunately, FOOD Share has a very low administrative overhead, with 96 percent of money donated going to buy food. Pedi said that the volunteer efforts of local seniors help to keep their costs low.

The Howells make the donations in the name of their clients so that their clients can feel a part of the giving experience. Vickie Howell said, "For nearly 30 years FOOD Share has been helping people in need. We feel honored to be a part of their mission to help others."
