Surfers to compete at Malibu Classic

The Malibu Classic, an invitational pro/am shortboard surfing competition, will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fri. Aug. 17 and Sat. Aug. 18 at First Point, Surfrider Beach, in Malibu.

The surf competition is by invitation only and the event is open to the public for viewing from the beach.

A private gala on the Malibu Pier will follow Friday's competition from 7 to 10 p.m. for competitors, staff, friends, family and sponsors. An after party will be held at Casa Escobar in Cross Creek later that night. To attend, email john@sickydicky.com.

Saturday's competition will include a main event for all divisions. A silent auction and concert open to the public will follow at the Malibu Inn, 22969 Pacific Coast Hwy., Malibu. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The events will benefit the Lyon Herron Foundation. Herron, a Malibu surfer, has been battling Gardner's Syndrome, a rare genetic disease, for the past 11 years.
