Skateboarders to compete at X Games A group of local skateboarders will attempt to go big in front of a raucous Home Depot Center crowd at the X Games Friday night. Of the 10 Southern California high school skaters who will be competing in an invitational best trick competition beginning at 8 p.m., seven participated in this year's inaugural California High School Skateboard Club, founded by Thousand Oaks resident Jeff Stern. Matt Pierce of Oak Park, Agoura's Josh Krakover, Roy Canright of Simi Valley, Kristos Andrews of Santa Monica and Lee Derber, Justin Klegka and Cory Phillips of Westlake all represented their schools in the CHSSC this season, and all were invited to perform Friday night. Andrews was the club's individual champion. Regular season competitions took place at Skatelab in Simi Valley. Zack Krull of Calabasas, Austin Squire of Pacific Palisades and Sean Bloom of Brentwood will join the other skaters at the X Games venue in Carson. "These are some of the best high school skateboarders in Southern California," Stern said. "All of these guys get along. We've done photo shoots, video shoots; it doesn't matter because they just like to skate together. It's a great opportunity for all of them." Stern, who rented an RV to haul the guys around in for the weekend, said the group will also perform Saturday at 4 p.m. outside of the Home Depot Center. |
