Parents at fault

Lorena Billig is upset about a "speeder" at 20 miles per hour in her neighborhood while her children are playing in the street apparently with her permission.

Wake up, Lorena. It is against the law for children to play in any street. A mother who allows her children to play in the streets is endangering her children and should be investigated by the Department of Children's Services, the children placed appropriately and the mother prosecuted, according to the law.

Who will she blame when her kids are injured or killed by this behavior, which she not only condones but participates in? At the least she needs some serious education and parenting classes. Children should be taught to obey the law and their parents too.

Lorena refers to parents apparently posted as guards to warn children in the streets of oncoming cars. She is miffed that the car driver did not slow down when she yelled "car" and took it upon herself to caution the motorist by motioning her to slow down.

The motorist was understandably upset at Lorena's attitude of abovethelaw vigilantism. Now we are all supposed to drive under the posted limit on the chance that Lorena is aiding and abetting lawlessness on the part of her kids? If her children cannot be taught, or trained, to stay out of the street they should not be allowed out the front door. Playing in the streets is forbidden and always has been.

We seem to have this problem in my neighborhood, too. I see signs that read "slow children." I'm not sure what that means. It seems in this case it is the mom who is slow, not the children. Donald F. Stricklin Calabasas
