Thankful for HOA rules and regs

Thirteen years ago my wife and I moved into a complex in Oak Park governed by a homeowner's association. Before closing escrow we were given a copy of the CC&Rs and told we would be legally bound to follow and abide by them. Although there were things we didn't like, we felt they provided us with protection against potentially inconsiderate behavior from neighbors we would be living in rather close quarters with.

Thus far, the CC&Rs have offered recourse against "children" partying and openly drinking in the streets, riding skateboards recklessly throughout the complex, destruction of landscaping and open acts of vandalism. I could go on.

Often, the people who complain the loudest about the rules are those who are the greatest violators. There are renters on my street who possess a total of 12 cars with garage space for only six. Without our parking regulations, they would gladly use guest parking for their personal use, creating considerable noise and traffic throughout the area.

Rules and regulations governing homeowner's associations are created to help maintain a decent quality of life for all. When people purchase or rent within an HOA, it is their responsibility to familiarize themselves with the CC&Rs. Failure to do so does not entitle them to victim status. Rather than whine about "totalitarian" rules, they should exercise their freedom to move if they find things so unpleasant.
