Thinks bicyclists are road hogs

I was amazed at the response of readers who had much to say about your recent article reporting the tragic bicycle accident that recently occurred in our area. I was equally surprised by the lack of response of motorists that fall victim to the rude and arrogant bicycle riders who do not feel obliged to obey the "rules of the road."

Right of way rules apply to bicycle riders as well as motorists. As quoted in one letter, "While this might come as a shock to some motorists, bicyclists do have the same rights and responsibilities as automobile drivers on public streets." Enough said. That is my point exactly.

It's the responsibility part the bicycle riders seem to forget. ". . . wide berth . . . benefit of the doubt . . ." just as soon as you obey the rules.

Over the years there are a growing number of bicyclists who, although they don't reside in Westlake Village, come here, park their cars on shopping center lots and neighborhood streets and enjoy riding their bicycles in my community. Unfortunately, many of them do not feel obliged to ride responsibly.

As a motorist, when I am behind the wheel my mind is ever diligent. I constantly observe and avoid the careless acts of bicycle riders, even when they snub their noses at my rights. I wonder if the "lizard helmets" that are a part of the ridiculous costumes these people wear are squeezing their brains so they are not able to remain alert.

The increasingly rude and disrespectful behavior of these bicyclists has definitely influenced my willingness to welcome bicycle riders to my neighborhood, and I think a growing number of my neighbors and residents of Westlake Village would agree. Find someplace else to disturb the peace.
