Prevent Fourth of July jitters The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care & Control reminds pet owners that extra precautions are necessary to protect pets during Fourth of July celebrations, which can be potentially dangerous and frightening for pets. Dogs and cats can become startled and disoriented by the loud noises of firecrackers or fireworks. Pets may panic, become confused or attempt to escape their enclosures by chewing leashes or breaking fences. Here are some Fourth of July tips to follow: +During fireworks displays, keep pets indoors and away from windows at all times. It is better for them to be in a familiar, safe and comfortable place where the noise and lights won't disorient them. Sounds from the television or radio can help soothe pets and minimize the noise of fireworks. +Keep current license and ID tags affixed to pets' collars at all times. Consider having pets microchipped. If ID tags are lost, a microchip may be the only way to ensure a pet can be reunited with its owner. +Do not keep pets in the backyard, even if they are tied up. Dogs in particular can break free of their restraints and jump fences when they become scared. +Do not take pets to community fireworks events. Most events do not allow animals, and the noises are terrifying to pets. +Post the phone numbers of emergency clinics and the animal control agency that services the area where they can be easily found in case of an emergency. +Pet owners who must leave town without their pets during the holidays should leave them with someone who will be cautious during the Fourth of July celebrations. Pets can also be left at a reputable boarding facility, where they can be taken care of and kept indoors at all times. Los Angeles County Animal Shelters are available to answer questions 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If a pet does become lost, it is critical that its owners visit animal shelters surrounding the area. Shelter staff and volunteers can also provide suggestions for finding lost pets. Most shelters allow pet owners to post photographs of missing pets along with information to contact the owner. |
