'We the people' own the airwaves Enough is enough. It's time to take back our country and our democracy. We need to start by re-regulating the media. The truth is not being told openly and honestly by the huge multinationals who control our networks. Two stolen elections, an invasion based on lies, laws that create enormous corporate wealth at the expense of the individual, the dismantling of our Constitution, the blurring of the lines between church and state- and what's the American public focused on? This administration commits Watergate-sized scandals on a weekly basis. The great American middle class, which was established largely through strong labor unions, is being decimated, and all the networks want to talk about is American Idol or Paris Hilton. Twenty-five short years ago there were approximately 100 media owners in this country. Today we have only four. Four large, predominately rightwing companies who control all we see. Their goals are ratings, profit and political agenda, not properly informing the public. Remember, it is "we the people" who own the airwaves. These companies have to "serve the public" or they could lose their licenses. It's time to make them serve. To move forward as a democracy we need a well-informed American public. This will take a more open, honest and diversified media- a media that functions to question our government, not protect it. Michael Roberts Agoura Hills |
