Urges Westlake to build sidewalks

Our community has been rocked recently by a fatal pedestrian accident and several bicycle accidents, as seen by the stream of letters to The Acorn. Yet one big issue, one that affects cyclists and pedestrians alike, has been overlooked.

The pedestrian accident on Lindero Canyon occurred at the only stretch of the street between Agoura and Triunfo Canyon roads without a sidewalk. Perhaps had the city opted to extend the walkway, the accident could have been avoided.

Walkers and runners on this stretch of Lindero Canyon are forced to walk on the curb or use the bike path because of this gap. Not only is that dangerous to them, but it forces cyclists to veer into traffic lanes. In fact, there is no complete route that circles the lake, as sidewalks are also missing on Agoura Road between Lakeview Canyon and Lindero Canyon roads where again runners and walkers are forced to use the bike lane.

Rather than looking for blame in these accidents, we urge walkers, cyclists, runners and motorists to unite to petition the city of Westlake to build sidewalks and provide a safe route for all. Let's turn these tragedies into progress before someone else is hurt or killed. Bonnie and Dino Quintanilla Westlake Village
