UCLA offers online extension courses This summer, the Department of Education at UCLA Extension offers several early childhood education courses online. Classes apply toward Title 22 requirements, Child Development Permits and the Basic and Advanced Programs for teachers, administrators and directors of young children up to age 5. Following are a list of available courses. Enrollment is underway. Students will need a computer with Internet access. "Development in Early Childhood" examines physical, cognitive, language and psychosocial development domains within a multicultural context, with special emphasis on the role of play in children's development. June 26 through Aug. 14. "The Young Child in the Family and the Community" focuses on the dynamics between the young child, family, school and community, including cultural and social influences. July 10 through Aug. 28, and July 24 through Sept. 11. "Introduction to Teaching Young Children" reviews how existing program types meet the needs of the preschool child and teacher, as well as the criteria of a quality learning environment. June 25 through Aug. 13. "Curriculum Development and Classroom Management" covers how to equip, plan and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum and learning environment for young children. June 23 through Aug. 11, and July 27 through Aug. 22. "The Role of Play in Early Childhood Education" provides a historical and contemporary perspective of play, handson experiences and insight into the dynamics of children's play, with attention to Piagetian theory, developmental appropriateness and multicultural approaches. July 2 through Aug. 6. "Health, Nutrition and Safety in Early Childhood" covers guidelines for creating a safe and healthy environment for the young child, including emergency preparedness. July 9 through Aug. 13. "Including Children with Special Needs in Typical Child Care, Preschool and Kindergarten Programs" is designed to help teachers, caregivers and directors better understand and implement procedures and policies for inclusion of young children with special needs. June 28 through Aug. 2. |
