A simple 'thank you' to educators

I am writing to say a simple "thank you" to the teachers, staff and administrators of the Oak Park Unified School District. I have two children who have had the wonderful experience of attending Oak Park schools for their entire school careers. In June, our oldest will graduate from college and our youngest from OPHS. I find myself reflecting on these years as graduation quickly approaches.

When my kids were in elementary school at Oak Hills, we were fortunate to be under the leadership of Tony Knight, then principal. In all of our experiences I found Mr. Knight to be a compassionate and caring leader. Parents didn't always agree with his teaching methods, but I never doubted that his interests were always about what was best for my kids.

The teaching staff he amassed was wonderful. Each and every teacher gave everything they had to educate my children and make them better people on a daily basis. I thank them now for all they did. Because of their commitment, my kids were sent off with a strong academic foundation.

At Oak Park High School, I have been fortunate to know two spectacular administrators, Lynn McCormack and Cliff Moore. Both are wonderful leaders and paramount educators. My children have been lucky to have each of them leading OPHS. I thank them from the bottom of my heart for dedicating their careers to benefit my children.

There are few words to describe the teachers and staff at OPHS. They care, and because they care they give everything to help our teenagers become the adults they are capable of becoming. They provided an environment of high standards while nurturing each child. They laughed and cried with my kids. They encouraged them and nudged them into working at their highest standards. I shall be forever indebted to them for all that they have done for my kids. Thanks to all of you.

When we purchased our home in Oak Park in 1991, the "buzz" was about the schools, about the unparalleled educational program. Looking back on that first day of school at Oak Hills, we could never have imagined the tremendous impact that the programs and, most importantly, the people of OPUSD would make on our lives.

To all of those within the Oak Park Unified School District, you have touched the lives of my young adults, and we will take away many wonderful memories. Please accept our deepest appreciation for all that you have shared with us. Sharon Iker Oak Park
