Oak Park wins state lacrosse title A week after beating Westlake in the Southern California Lacrosse Association title match, Oak Park took down WHS once again in the California Division II State Lacrosse Championship Sunday afternoon at Newbury Park High. Oak Park was led by three goals apiece from seniors Blair Bennett and Nick O'Bryen, and two goals each from seniors Max Luchs and Kyle Benton. It was a dominating way for the seniors to finish their careers. Oak Park posted a 35-1 overall record during the past two seasons, including a 17-0 mark this year. Senior Chad Costello, who will attend Yale, led the defense along with junior Corey Whelan, goalie Chris DaCar and sophomores Matt Caspari and Eric Albers. Oak Park qualified for the final after beating a previously undefeated West Valley of San Jose squad in the semifinal round. Westlake defeated Woodbridge to make it to the final. The state title is Oak Park's first after finishing as runner-up in 2006. Oak Park's championship roster consisted of the following players: Cody Skene, Ryan Darling, Nick Tullio, Max Ball, Kevin Witkow, Brett Zeola, Josh Marcus, Jake Kraus, Joe Carpenter, Chandler Larson, Eric Hunsicker, Cassie Draeger, Kevin Marshall, Trevor Goehring, Brent Botwin, Dylan Marcus, Grayson Phillips, Conrad Schroeder, Luchs, Caspari, O'Bryen, Benton, Albers, Whelan, Bennett, Costello and DaCar. Mike McGovern is the head coach. |
