Bursting the 'wellendowed' bubble

It was heartbreaking to read the editor's article on homeowner associations and the letter regarding gated communities in the April 26 Acorn.

We focus on ourselves and our problems, isolating our communities with illusions of security and obsessing on our "independent-minded" neighbor's tastes in lawn ornaments.

Our world- not just the wellendowed bubble in which we live- is full of innocents suffering from horrible disease (many of them preventable or treatable), hunger (while we are full to overflowing) and violence both here and abroad, much of it of our own making.

If we could all care as much about a child in Darfur, a displaced family in Iraq or a student in south central L.A. as we do about what color our neighbor's garage door is, we could make this world better and brighter. I pray we have the heart, courage and wisdom to examine our priorities.

I remain grateful to all those I do meet who bring hope to the hopeless in any small way. Thank you. Kathy Ludwick Agoura
