Don't wait for tragedy to strike

I second Linda Le Vine's concern about the disasterwaitingto-happen outside the Agoura Animal Shelter ("Treacherous turn into animal shelter," March 22). I hold my breath each time I drive into and out of the shelter.

The dangerous curves on both sides of Agoura Road make it difficult to see approaching cars coming from either north or south of those curves. Many families visit the shelter and it's a miracle that no one has been injured or killed entering or leaving that area. Most of the cars approach those curves at speeds above the limit and follow each other at close intervals.

Let's not wait for a terrible accident and loss of life to spur us to action. Let's bring it to the attention of the City Council and county officials and make it an important issue to reconcile now instead of waiting 10 years and hoping the road can be straightened then.

There are a number of shortterm fixes that might be considered:

Place animal shelter entrance signs 100 yards away from the entrance on both sides of the curves as a warning to motorists.

Clean up foliage that blocks the present shelter signs.

Make the signs more attention-getting by making them larger and higher.

Have a police presence near the area to stop, warn and ticket speeders.

Let's engage our city's traffic engineer and civil engineer, our council, city manager, county officials and the manager of the shelter and work together to remedy this dangerous situation. Let's act now. Carol Rosenberg Agoura Hills
