Relay for Life kicks off Saturday
More than 50 teams are committed to keeping at least one member on the Willow track at all times during the 24-hour event- because cancer never sleeps. Relay For Life begins with a survivors' lap in which those who have the disease or who have beaten the disease receive special recognition. An inspirational luminaria, or candle-lighting vigil, will be held at sundown on Saturday in which friends family members are given the chance to remember loved ones who've either died from or survived cancer. To participate as a survivor, team member or volunteer, contact Ling Wu at (818) 715-2616. The Acorn will have a volunteer team called "The Acorn Nuts." The public is invited to attend the festivities and the admission is free. According to the American Cancer Society, the Relay for Life sponsor, one in three women and one in two men will face a cancer diagnosis at some point during their lives. The most common cancers in adults are skin, lung, colon, rectal, breast, endometrial, ovarian and prostate. All are lifethreatening. Other Agoura Relay For Life activities include a pancake breakfast at 7 a.m. Sun., April 29 hosted by the Kiwanis of Woodland Hills. This year, Relay For Life events will be held in more than 295 communities throughout California. The Calabasas Relay is in June.
