Dangerous turns onto Kanan Road

Anyone who lives in north Agoura Hills or Oak Park can attest to how dangerous it has become to turn left onto Kanan Road from any of the driveways out of the two shopping strips north of Thousand Oaks Boulevard. From Carl's Jr. To Yum Yum Donuts to Agoura Deli, it has become an unnerving experience to get home.

Some of these driveways are worse than others, but the main problem with all of them is the now almost constant flow of traffic up and down Kanan Road. It has become so constant and so swift that the opportunities to turn left have become very few and far between.

Some drivers remain patient and wait for any opening. Others grow impatient and reckless bolt out into traffic, endangering everyone. And some simply turn right and go south to Thousand Oaks Boulevard and make a U-turn.

The third option is certainly the safest, but if all northbound drivers did it we'd have a left turn congestion problem at Thousand Oaks and Kanan. Add to all this the numerous jaywalkers across Kanan Road and you have a real recipe for trouble.

I don't have the statistics, but something tells me that this corridor is a real hot spot for accidents, big and small, and I'm afraid it's only a matter of time before something tragic occurs along this busy portion of Kanan Road.

So the question is this: Is the leadership of Agoura Hills aware of this dangerous situation and if so, do they have any kind of solution in the works for solving the problem? Many of us who live north but shop south would be comforted to know that this safety issue is being addressed.

In the past, the present traffic pattern wasn't an issue, but with the growth of the community it has now become hazardous.

It seems clear that a new light with a left turn arrow and crosswalk needs to be installed somewhere along this very tricky strip of Kanan Road. Jeffrey Combs Oak Park
