Relay For Life making great strides
Almost every family in America has known a loved one who's been stricken with cancer. It is the epidemic of our time, a killer that won't go away. According to research, 30 percent of the women and half the men will face a cancer diagnosis sometime in their lives. You can do something about it; the American Cancer Society already is. The organization started an event in the mid-1980s called Relay For Life, a fun-filled 24-hour walkathon held each year

across America to c e l e b r a t e survivorship and raise money for Cancer Society research and programs. Local teams are being formed to take part in this

year's Relay For

Life, which is scheduled for April 28 and 29. Gathering at public school tracks in Calabasas, Agoura Hills and Thousand Oaks, the team members will take turns walking or running laps. Because cancer never sleeps, each team tries to keep at least one member on the track at all times. The event gets underway with an inspirational survivor's lap and is followed by a luminaria, or candle-lighting vigil, when the sun goes down. The Relay For Life fundraiser has made great strides. Last year, the teams in Agoura Hills alone raised $92,000. The goal this year is even higher. The Acorn newspaper is proud to enter a team in this year's Agoura Relay at Willow Elementary School. The "Acorn Nuts" invite you stop by and say hello, enjoy the activities and support the cause. In the meantime, visit www.acsevents.org/relay/ca/ agoura to learn more about how you can be a part of this exciting opportunity to help eradicate cancer in our lifetime.
