Cleaning the creeks in Calabasas

The city of Calabasas will host the annual Creek Cleanup from 9 to 11 a.m. Sat., April 14 at De Anza Park, 3701 Lost Hills Road.

Participants will remove waste from local creeks. Volunteers will receive a free Creek Cleanup Day T-shirt. Gloves and plastic bags will be provided, and light refreshments will be served. Students may earn community service hours.

Bring sunblock and wear clothing and sturdy shoes (not flip-flops) that can get dirty.

In 1972, 36 percent of the nation's assessed streams were safe for uses such as fishing and swimming. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, about 60 percent are safe today.
