Issues in Iraq war are complex

I am writing in response to Lloyd Carter's paranoid and simplistic view about the war in Iraq and Islam. (Letter to the editor, March 8). If I recall, the slaughter between Sunnis and Shiite and the increase in terrorism started after the U.S. invasion in Iraq. Voices in the Middle East are not silent about the carnage of innocent human beings. You are just not listening.

Sunni and Shiite religious leaders are calling for calm and pressuring political leaders for national unity. From the USA to the Middle East it has become a race for power and survival. Our support of dictators afraid to lose power and our fear of losing our stronghold for global domination are leading us to a war without end.

I would suggest that you find a middle balance and educate yourself about Islam and spend your time on promoting new sources of energy that can help us all to be more independent. People and their understanding of religion are the problem; there has not been one specific religion which has helped to bring peace in this world.

There is room for all of us to learn from each other, but it is not by your racist comments and by citing extreme examples that you will bring peace, tolerance and harmony. Patricia Ahmad Agoura Hills
