City in a charitable mood
By Stephanie Bertholdo bertholdo@theacorn.com

The city of Agoura Hills wants to lend a financial hand to local social and cultural organizations through its Community Outreach Grant Program.

A minimum of $250 will be given to qualifying organizations. The City Council is expected to disperse up to $23,000 in total grant money, said Nathan Hamburger, assistant to the city manager.

"The city has recognized the value of these organizations and that they strive to enhance the quality of life that exists in our community," Hamburger said.

Community nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply for the grant if their service benefits the greater Agoura Hills community. In the past, the city has subsidized the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, high school band programs, booster clubs, the local animal shelter and groups offering broad benefits to the community.

Churches, synagogues and other religious organizations are eligible to receive money as long as the program proposed is not targeted for a narrow group of residents or specific religious activities. Hamburger said a church offering sports programs for all area youth would be an example of the sort of applicant the City Council would consider.

Applications are now available at Agoura Hills City Hall. Fri., April 6 is the deadline.
