Last-minute shuffle forces change in election forums Two homeowners associations have canceled their candidate forums for the March 6 Calabasas City Council election, causing some last-minute changes on the city's calendar. But with the dates now finalized Calabasas residents can look forward to three forums, one of which is tonight. The Calabasas Park Homeowners Association (CPHA) was to host a forum at the Calabasas Inn, but the members last week decided not to. Media representatives from the city said they planned to broadcast the forum and were waiting for the final paperwork when the association canceled. "The two board members that were in charge and were going to set it up and take care of it, they had endorsed a candidate," said Dan Scully, association president. "They were involved in putting it together and orchestrating it, and when we found out they couldn't do that, it was the 11th hour, so we canceled it." The city of Calabasas won't air a political forum if the sponsoring association has endorsed a candidate or if any board member of the homeowners association who has individually endorsed a candidate serves as a spokesperson or mediator for the event. The CPHA instead invited the four council candidates to visit an association meeting this week to speak to members. The Stone Creek Homeowners Association will take advantage of tonight's open time slot to host its own forum at the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District Headquarters. It won't be televised because the board wasn't able to apply for coverage early enough. The Las Virgenes Homeowners Federation Feb. 6 forum also was canceled after board members were informed they were too late to apply for coverage on CTV. "We just didn't feel like we were going to get enough coverage without the TV station," said John Low, the federation president. "Given all the other things going on in the community, we were concerned we wouldn't have an audience for candidates. Apparently, they have a lot of things to cover in Calabasas." He said the federation has not--and will not--endorse a candidate. Forums on Tues., Feb. 20 and Mon., Feb. 26, hosted by the Greater Mulwood Homeowners Association and the Calabasas Chamber of Commerce respectively, are still on. The March 6 election will see Toby Keeler and Dale Reicheneder challenge Councilmember Barry Groveman and Mayor Dennis Washburn for their seats. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. Voters may request absentee or vote-by-mail ballots until Feb. 27. The last day to register to vote is Mon., Feb. 19. Election results will be announced at the March 21 City Council meeting, where the oath of office will be administered for the newly elected members. City Council election forums
