Community tour of stream restoration project

Mountains Restoration Trust will conduct a community tour from 11 a.m. to noon Sat., Feb. 24 to update the public on a major stream restoration project at Headwaters Corner at Calabasas, a 12-acre ecological interpretive center and community resource at the urban/rural interface in the Santa Monica Mountains.

The tour will meet at Headwaters Corner's Masson House, 23075 Mulholland Hwy., Calabasas. Comfortable shoes are recommended.

The presentation will allow the public to view the work in progress and to learn more about this significant stream restoration project. A geomorphologist from Cal State Los Angeles will discuss the dynamics of natural stream systems in relation to this project restoring and protecting a land, wildlife and watershed site.

The stream restoration project began last summer along Dry Canyon Creek, a perennial headwater stream of the Los Angeles River. The project involves bioengineering streambanks previously armored with concrete and riparian and wetland habitat restoration.

For more information or reservations, call Debbie Bruschaber at Mountains Restoration Trust, (818) 591-1701, ext. 205. You can also send an e-mail to dbruschaber@mountainstrust.org or visit the website online at www.mountainstrust.org.
