Law Enforcement Safety Tips
Highway Patrol warns about

bogus donations

The California Highway Patrol is advising California residents to be aware of people soliciting donations on behalf of the department's members.

Numerous residents over the past couple of weeks reported receiving letters and phone calls requesting donations to the "American Association of State Troopers" claiming to support CHP members. The CHP warns that these letters and calls are not from representatives of the highway patrol or its retirees.

"The CHP, its officers, its unions, our Widows and Orphans Fund and the 11-99 Foundation never solicit funds from the general public by phone, mail, Internet or in person," said CHP Commissioner Mike Brown. "If anyone contacts you claiming they represent CHP officers or their families and seek contributions, tell them no."

The 11-99 Foundation is a nonprofit organization of individuals who contribute to highway patrol employees and their families in time of need. 11-99 is the radio code for officer requiring help in an emergency. More information is available at www.chp11-99.org.

After the CHP's written request in November 2006, the "American Association of State Troopers" agreed to discontinue using the department's name in soliciting donations.

Theft awareness

The Malibu-Lost Hills Sheriff's Station urges residents to take extra precaution in the ongoing effort to fight home and vehicle burglaries.

These crimes of opportunity often result when people leave their personal property, such as laptops, purses, cellphones, wallets and briefcases, on a seat or in an open console.

Residents can help deter theft by keeping their valuables out of plain view and keeping their garages and front doors locked.
