History lesson

I read Ms. Sandra Stafford's letter "Wrong Delivery" (Acorn, Jan. 25) with great interest and agree with her wholeheartedly. As she had stated, downtown Cornell once had a post office to service the unincorporated area. Its function was transferred to the current Agoura Hills location as ZIP code 91301.

Nevertheless, the current ZIP code directory of the U.S. Postal Service still officially lists Cornell as a separate community with a reference to 91301. Therefore, I suggest that the Cornell area obtain its own ZIP code with services based out of the post office located in the city of Agoura Hills.

Not long ago, Oak Park was assigned its own ZIP code and has mail services provided by the Agoura Hills Post Office. The unincorporated area communities surrounding Cornell, from Malibou Lake extending to Triunfo and Lobo canyons, have approximately 1,000 households, as determined by conversations with area homeowners associations as well as with the members of the Cornell Preservaion Organization.

The area Ms. Stafford refers to is rich with history and local lore of the bygone years. The various aspects of this history are described by history buff Brian Rooney in his book "Three Magical Miles." Copies of this book may be obtained from any member of the Cornell Preservation Organization at the Rustic Canyon General Store at 2598 Sierra Creek Rd. on the intersection of Kanan Road or at the bookstore in the National Parks Visitors Center in Thousand Oaks.

With the history and current population the Cornell area has, it is time that Cornell regains its rightful identity with its very own recognizable ZIP code.
