YMCA receives funds to benefit after-school programs
J. C. Penney gives $32,800 grant
      The Southeast Ventura County YMCA received a $32,812 grant from the J.C. Penney After-school Fund to help support its child-care programs in Agoura Hills, Moorpark, Oak Park, Newbury Park, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and Westlake Village.

Maritime Museum has ship model sale
      The Ventura County Maritime Museum will present its annual holiday ship model sale throughout December. All proceeds from sales benefit the educational programs of the museum. Children get big shopping spree
      Twenty-five children, ages 6 to 17, were given the chance to shop for new clothes with money raised by the Rotary Club of Westlake Village. The children were referred by Interface Family Services. The 7:30 a.m. shopping spree was also hosted by J.C. Penney in The Oaks mall.

Boat cruises sail from the harbor
Cookies, cocoa are served
      California Sleigh Rides will present holiday boat cruises in Ventura Harbor. Public cruises depart nightly in December from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and 8 to 9:30 p.m. The cost is $20 for adults and $10 for children and includes free hot chocolate and cookies.

      The California Coastal Commission invites students in grades kindergarten through 12 to enter the 2008 California Coastal Art and Poetry Contest. Arts and poetry must have a California coastal or marine theme to be eligible.

Highway Patrol hosts toy drive
Drop off gifts at any CHP office
      The California Highway Patrol will host the annual CHiPs for Kids Toy Drive through Fri., Dec. 21. Donated toys, which must be in new condition and left unwrapped, can be dropped off at any CHP office statewide, including those in Moorpark and Ventura. The offices are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gift certificates for sale
      The Thousand Oaks Farmers' Market at 403 W. Hillcrest Drive will be open Thursdays from 2 to 6:30 p.m. throughout the holiday season except on Thurs., Dec. 27. Gift certificates in any amount are available for the holiday season and can be obtained during the hours of operation.
