      As I write this, my last remaining grandparent, my paternal grandmother, is in critical condition on her 95th birthday. Grandma Picarella might not make it out of the hospital alive. When my paternal grandfather died- the first of my grandparents to pass, I regretted not knowing more about him. So I made it a point to get to know my other grandparents better.

Plenty to do at Harvest Festival
      The Ventura Harvest Festival will take place Fri. through Sun., Oct. 5 through 7 at Seaside Park, 10 W. Harbor Blvd., Ventura. Hours are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. The festival includes an arts and crafts show, entertainment on an outdoor stage, puppet shows and a "kid zone.

Fund awards grants to women and girls
      The Ventura County Community Foundation has awarded eight grants totaling $60,000 to programs for women and girls in Ventura County. The Women's Legacy Fund, an endowed grant-making fund at the foundation, has a goal of improving opportunities for women and girls in Ventura County.
